My Perry County doeMonday was the opening day of the 2008 Ohio gun season for deer. Dad and I hunted my sisters land in Perry County. It was a cold morning with light snowfall and strong gusty winds. We saw at least 20 deer, including the doe that I took around 9:00. Dad saw several does and a couple of bucks but couldn't get a good shot. I have taken many deer over the years, but I was especially glad to get this one because I have not had a chance to hunt much for the last few years. I butchered the deer myself and am looking forward to many good meals of venison.
I have been hunting deer for thirty years or so, and have lost track of how many deer that I have harvested. This was the first deer that I have taken from outside of the same small tract of national forrest land that I have always hunted. I hope to get back there again at least once this season.
Dad coming to check out my deerDad hunted deer with bow and gun back in the 1970's when the deer population wasn't nearly as high as it is currently. After many years off he decided to give it a try again a couple of years ago. So far he hasn't had any luck, but he is seeing deer and it is just a matter of time before he connects.
We plan to give it another try Sunday, and after that the two day season later this month. We will also try to get out for muzzle loader season after Christmas.
